Why does my publication need an index?

A publication requires an index if users will need to locate
subjects in the text before or after reading through it.
The more sophisticated the text, the more the user needs a
comprehensive guide to the information contained.
A List of Contents is useful, but limited.

A professional index will include all significant topics and
their inter-relationships in the index, allowing users to
gain maximum advantage from the text.

The lack of a good index can seriously undermine a publication's
success. Books reviews often refer to the adequacy of the index,
and criticism may be severe in this area.
