Indexing Specialists has attended a number of conferences and training courses on the subject of developments in XML (eXtensible Markup Language). This is an emerging "media-neutral" technology that is expected to have major effects on the publishing industry.

We are able to handle Portable Document Format (PDF) proofs (A4 size). This gives editors the option of sending publications to us electronically, rather than hard copy, should this format be preferred. Our broadband connection facilitates rapid delivery by e-mail.

A breakthrough has been made linking an index to the text. We recently completed the indexing of Magellan On-line LearningTM, an interactive guide to financial products. This is available on CD-Rom and via the Internet. For full details see issue 5 of Signpost.

Current developments include preparing indexes for both paper and on-line applications. Another approach is to attach an index to already prepared data in HTML or SGML.
Incidentally, the recent development of Macrex Version 7 (the Windows version of Macrex) now allows for insertion of index data in these markup languages. You can contact the Macrex suppliers via our links page.

Present software for indexing internet and intranet materials is not ideal for convenient indexing of books in electronic format.
EIPs or Enterprise Information Portals are a more recent development for users of larger quantities of information in internet and intranet resources. They have the capability of handling unstructured data and we are exploring this area ourselves. Comments and suggestions would be very welcome for all interested parties.
